Here's the place to discuss science fiction and fantasy TV and Web series, plus their characters, actors, and crew.

Sanctuary (Spoilers)

New postby Raven Kai » Fri Aug 15, 2008 11:16 am

Wow. I just realized we haven't done a lot of talking about Sanctuary since the webisodes ended. With the show premiering on Sci Fi Channel on October 3, 2008, it's time to have a dedicated thread to the series.

Along with that, there's a meet and greet with Amanda Tapping, Damian Kindler and Robin Dunne at Tropicana Field on August 30, 2008. I posted the info at uberscifigeek.com
ÜberSciFiGeek wrote:As a continuation of fun community events that they have been hosting this year, on August 30th the Tampa Bay Rays are welcoming Amanda Tapping, Damian Kindler and Robin Dunne of the new Sci Fi Channel series Sanctuary to Tropicana Field. Amanda, Damian and Robin will be signing autographs and meeting with fans from 2:00-3:00 PM. Anyone interested in meeting them can line up near the escalators at Gate 1 as soon as the front gates open at 1:50 PM. After the signing, Amanda, Damian and Robin will also be throwing out the first pitch of the game around 3:50 PM. After the game, the band “We the Kings” will be performing a concert, but first the Rays’ very own Rusty will be talking to Amanda, Damian and Robin about the upcoming season of Sanctuary.

No Emilie? Not worth going to, then :P

But i did hear from a reliable source that the new and evolved Sanctuary is great.

Ryan Robbins was talking about how great it looks, too! I listened to Damian Kindler's newest podcast and he drops some mild spoilers about the changes. First thought is NO but after a bit it was exciting because it will be fairly familiar but not a complete do-over of the "Great 8" (original weps). I'm more intrigued and excited every day.

I meant to subtly probe Emilie for information on that. Have they changed the pilot so that it's different to the Great 8? I don't know if many fans would like that.

Yes, it has change some but not completely.

*mild spoilers*

The first 4 weps have been expanded and fleshed out to be a 2 hour pilot. The second 4 weps don't take place until later in the season. Some key elements from the first 4 have changed, for example, Ernie does not appear in season 1 because Peter DeLuise was not available due to other commitments. Another character has been created to fill that role. In addition, the emotional scene that occured slightly after the Ernie scene has been rewritten and relocated. Ashley does not learn of certain family secrets until later in the season. The begining of the season starts out with more 'Real World' elements as we get to know Will Zimmerman. He has a much bigger background story now and as he begins to become submerged into the world of Helen Magnus, the visual appearance of the show will begin to alter.

All of the characters have been fleshed out and because there are 13 hours to deal with it, there is more story and experience to work with to introduce us to those characters and give them depth.

Overall, it will have much of the same look and feel but more polished and more under the surface when you scratch it.

I think I am ok with that.

The issue with a webisode series is big time constraints. You kind of need to jump to the point right away in order to grab people's attention. I think I'd prefer more of a build up to the meeting, and more in the first storyline. I liked the second one, but the first was really hooking. I'd love to see what they've done, taking it from an hour to two hours.

I agree. I much prefered the first 4 weps, they were more compelling, and while 5 through 8 were good, it did seem more like we skipped a lot of info between 4 and 5. There were lots of missing scenese and elements that would should have taken place in the character development. Now, I think, it will feel more fluid.

It is amazing how quickly they caught our attention with the limited time aloted. I think fleshing out the stories, building on the foundation that was laid by the webisodes, a lot of great things can be accomplished by the Sanctuary team. I trust the team, their history and body of work. I am fairly confident that the TV series will be the difference between the original "Pitfall" and "Pitfall: The Maya Adventure" :P

Hmmm, interesting very interesting... I'm very excited for it to come to tv up here on the Movie Network.... I know I will like it either way... to be honest I liked Sanctuary from the beginning, but it was screaming tv to me... but that could be my trained eye... but I'll love it no matter what! :D !

Ah, we love your 'well trained eye' and hope to see more of it around these parts.

I was worried during all the hype leading up to the Sanctuary Webseries, that it would let me down but in the end, I was estatic with how it turned out. Mind you, I participated in some heated debates (though they were suposed to just be discussions of opinion and turned out to be a bit of a bar-b-que directed at me for having objections to particular aspects of character development or lack there of) about the show but I loved it utterly.

Yes, there are changes to the new show and Yes, there were some issues not only with Stage 3 Media by suddenly cutting off of contact with the fan base and community when the Sci Fi deal was inked but no matter how skepitical I am of Sci Fi Channel in general, I have faith in Amanda Tapping, Damian Kindler and Martin Wood to produce a wonderful show. Some of the best Stargate moments ever caught on film were given to us by Amanda's acting, Damian's writing and Martin's direction. We have a decade old relationship with these people and I fully believe they are going to deliver Sanctuary greater then we imagined it could be.

According to what they said at the Comic Con Panel (I think that's where I heard it), they signed a deal that allows other networks to broadcast the episodes 24 hours after they a premiered on Sci Fi Channel. Contact your local stations and ask them to pick up Sanctuary!

Nice. That's been happening more and more down here. they call it fast tracking. we got Bionic woman a few days after it aired there, as well as most of the popular shows.
I just don't trust any of our channels not to mess it up like they did BSG and SG:1

7 is our best bet. They're a poison to a tv show, slow and painful death, spanning over the course of several years, unlike the other two who'd axe it after a few episodes.

Would anybody have an address they’d be willing to pmail to me for Tracy or Antoa?

I stopped by their www.SanctuaryFiction.net site on Thursday, and garnered a significantly sneaky and persistent Trojan/pup, free of charge, with just one click. /insert annoyance McAfee said it had killed the thing at the time of click, but, McAfee was wrong :? and I had to resort to some... stuff... that the SysAdmin doesn't know I can do, before it apparently actually died.

I don’t know if Tracy and Antoa and company know that their site has been infected – and I’m not going back there for an address in order to tell them (yes, I’m a pessimist – it makes me a highly effective geek-who-deals-with-the-users-during-development  ) since I clicked a drop-down on the site and McAfee on access promptly had something to clean up, and I then clicked the contact link, intending to send an email about the first click, and McAfee immediately had something else to clean!     But, I would like them to know, if they don't already.

Aye. I quite liked being able to pay for Sanctuary. It felt like I was helping. But if we plan to see it we'd have to resort to piracy (but buy the DVD's!)

He's grown up a lot since the first shoot and the reshoot. Did anyone see the reel on the website or at Scifi?

Did anyone else think that looked kind of like Ben Browder with the stuff popping up on his face? Oh and Will.. um.. wow, his childhood experience changed a bit as well as his meeting with Helen. LOL

October 3rd! Only a few weeks to go.

"An all new sci-fi channel original series"? Yeah, right! It ain't originally theirs. Do they steal credit for everything now?

Still excited about the release date. It's been a year since we were blessed with the webseries.
