jPod

New postby Raven Kai » Thu Jan 03, 2008 1:17 pm

http://www.cbc.ca/jpod/ wrote:Based on Douglas Coupland's cult bestseller of the same name, jPod is a one-hour drama series with amusing and evil twists. Ethan Jarlewski (DAVID W. KOPP) and four coworker pals are bureaucratically marooned in the bowels of a massive video game company, Neotronic Arts.

The series chronicles the amoral, lighthearted and often shocking lives of these five "Podsters." In Season One alone, they routinely deal with Chinese gangs, boneheaded bosses, sexual swinging, power lesbians, British royalty, gore-laced game designs and …it's a very long list.

jPod also follows the lives of Ethan's seemingly ultra normal parents, Jim (ALAN THICKE) and Carol Jarlewski (SHERRY MILLER). Jim and Carol are the new post-middle class, now enmeshed in marijuana grow-ops, biker gangs and ballroom dancing.

jPod is ultimately about the new relationships and modes of being that we, as citizens of this strange new century, are creating as we move forward. There is no map into the unknown, but we do have these five kids and a lot of heart and dark humor.

jPod, the highly anticipated series based on the novel by best selling author, Douglas Coupland, comes to CBC Television with 13 episodes. Tune in on Tuesday, January 8, 2008 at 9pm and get down with the podsters!

Cast

ETHAN JARLEWSKI (David W. Kopp)
is a game designer, sneaker collector and jPod's resident "gore specialist." Ethan spends much of his time inserting carnage and violence into video games — but he also ends up cleaning up the lifestyle disasters of his friends and families. When you need help burying a body, call Ethan—literally—but if he's playing 1980s retro 8-bit game, Defendoid, don't expect him to answer his phone.

BREE (Steph Song)
is single, sultry, nearing thirty and no matter how successful she is, she can never please her parents: "Chinese upbringing!" Bree is jPod's motion capture expert. She spends her time at work "taking perfect little moments and then imprisoning them on her hard drive forever and ever." Bree also enjoys trawling eBay for fetish items and repeatedly washing her hands with Purelle.

COWBOY (Ben Ayres)
likes the ladies almost as much as he likes mentholated filter-tipped Langleys. He's a genius core-level programmer haunted by his parents' murder/suicide pact that orphaned him when he was ten. When Cowboy's brain overheats he chills out with his beloved cough syrup, Chugatussin—while he pioneers new ways to increase his standing on the Vancityplayers sexual conquest website.

KAITLIN JOYCE (Emilie Ullerup)
is the most recent addition to jPod. She's a Florida trailer park refugee whose steel will helped elevate her from a teen pregnancy and morbid obesity into an often far-too-perky go-getter in the high tech gaming industry.

JOHN DOE (Torrance Coombs)
grew up on a lesbian commune and is Ethan's best pal. He wants nothing more than normalcy from his life to overcompensate for his weird youth. John Doe is part Hardy Boy and part Google and works harder than anyone to keep jPod happy and together. His hobbies include attending double-blind cola tastings and dissecting Ikea catalogs.

JIM JARLEWSKI (Alan Thicke)
Ethan's dad, is an ex-white collar worker turned movie extra. Jim's life quest is to land a speaking role in a film, television show or made-for-TV movie. He fuels this quest with regular servings of his signature beverage, rum & Gatorade: "The electrolytes in the Gatorade combat any possible negative effects of the booze."Jim is an accomplished ballroom dancer and the moment his wife, Carol, isn't around, he becomes a raging party monster.

CAROL JARLEWSKI (Sherry Miller)
is Ethan's Mom who converted the energy from her empty nest syndrome into profitable "lifestyle-oriented basement agriculture." Carol is a devoted wife who loves recycling, removing stains and meddling in the lives of her two sons. Like it or not, she is irresistible to all men, a trait that often leaves her with dead bodies in need of disposing. Fortunately the men in her life are good at helping her out on this.

KAM FONG (Raugi Yu)
is a loveable, generous-spirited Triad kingpin, massage parlor billionaire and human trafficker. He's Jim Jarlewski's best friend, his best enabler, and his regular ballroom dance partner. Whenever you have a problem that's too big to solve, Kam's the guy to call, even though his solutions can often be a bit on the ... medieval side.

STEVE LEFKOWITZ (Colin Cunningham)
is the gaming company's "Vice President in Charge of Vision." He's a walking pep machine, an obsessive spewer of trendy management techniques and a disciplined stalker of Ethan's mom, Carol.

Nice to have a Sanctuary and Stargate link to it as well.

I'm really loving Jpod as well. I really liked this past week. Not only were there more Stargate ties but Sanctuary ties too. And did anyone else know that 'Kevin' the Churly Burger clown is Emilie's boyfriend IRL? Crazy huh?

CBC axes 'MVP,' Intelligence' and 'JPod'

By Victoria Ahearn, THE CANADIAN PRESS

TORONTO - Despite heavy promotion and critical praise, the Canadian shows "MVP," "Intelligence" and "JPod" aren't being renewed by CBC-TV for next season, the public broadcaster said Friday.

"We certainly recognize they were frankly terrific shows and in many cases they attracted quite a degree of critical acclaim, but unfortunately they were unable to attract an audience," said spokesman Jeff Keay.

"Audience is not our only consideration, but it is an important one."

"MVP," a steamy hockey drama, and "JPod," a dark comedy about Vancouver video gamers, were launched in January and CBC had hoped they would lure younger viewers, said "MVP" co-creator Mary Young Leckie.

It's just not fair....

*wipes tears*

I actually had a dream last night about the 'Jpod' ending-that-should-be, when Ethen and Kaitlyn get together.

Okay thats kind of weird because I don't frequently dream about the shows I watch but seriesly, I'm pretty miffed over this.

*sighs*

4 more episodes.

What?! I thought it was doing good... this sucks... though i must catch up grr
Geek: slang term, noting individuals as "a peculiar or otherwise odd person, especially one who is perceived to be overly obsessed with one or more things including those of intellectuality, electronics, etc." Formerly, the term referred to a carnival performer often billed as a wild man whose act usually includes biting the head off a live chicken, bat, snake or bugs. The 1976 edition of the American Heritage Dictionary included only the definition regarding geek shows.

It's a brilliant show, unlike anything I've ever seen before. While it's wrapped in humor, I can see it very Kubric like, slaping you accross the face to make a point. Maybe I am reading too much into it but I think it's a brilliant satirical social commentary.

Felicia, check the 'Watch Full Episodes' link and let me know if you can watch it. I keep getting a 'content not available' message.

You know, for a supposed Emilie Ullerup fan I'm shamed to admit I didn't know this had aired yet!
I remember when Emilie let slip about it, I thought it'd still be another few months.
I missed it airing and ending, lol. Oh well, I saw a youtube clip for it and it actually looked like a good show, so now I'm 'aquiring' it (Don't ask how)

I love it. sadly i know it's fate ahead of time, but I can still enjoy it.

I'm only about 20 mins into the first episode but I can already see some really great stuff forming. Network Execs are idiots.
Somethings I noticed:
Emilie is gorgeous, as always. And she has spoken more in half an episode then in all of Sanctuary ;)
Cowboy has got to be my favorite character, and I'm not just talking about JPod. I love the guy.
Anyway, I took a 5-min break form the show, I'm going to get the rest of the series and watch it all today :D

Why is every single network executive a moron?
If they personally don't like a show, or the show only scored 999,999 viewers in the 60-70 female demographic instead of the estimated million they cancel it!
Usually I'd list the great shows axed in thier first season here, but sadly adding JPod to the list has made the list too large. So many great shows gone because networks refuse to give a show time to grow.

Look at SG:1 - Now I'm the biggest SG:1 fan in a 100KM radius (If not more) but if SG:1 was given the 'half season' chance that shows are now getting it would of died 10 years ago. SG:1 was good, but it was great after it had time to settle. Giving a show a half season chance is the dumbest thing ever. It's like the networks are TRYING to lose money!
My example: Drive.

This show was ok. FOX aired it with little to no advertisement, and they aired it in canada first. So the people who really wanted to see it downloaded it. Then after showing 2 episodes they moved it's time slot, then killed it after another 2!

They gave a show that THEY made and THEY paid for a 4 episode chance! They had 6 made but gave up after 4.
I hate tv networks these days.

Execs need to be stopped, JPod needs to be saved.

Network executives are STUPID!

Do you know the main problem with canceling a show after half a season? They used initial viewers records to judge the shows futute. They didn't give it time.

look at SG:1. There were creative differences between showtime and the producers (Show time wanted more boobies, for real). If they had given SG:1 a half season it would of been dead ages ago. The thing here is Word of Mouth. Look at me for example.

The first time I heard about jPod was when Emilie let slip she was working on it during the live Sanctuary chat. Hell, I only really watched it at first cuase I wanted to show my support for a relativly new actress, a sanctuarian, and a fellow sci-fi-geek. But here's the word of mouth:

Emilie -> Me.

Me -> my Brother ( I bugged him to watch it and he happened to walk in on the absorbed twin part - worse, the part where Kam was trying to buy it.
Me -> My friend. She's often reccomended cool shows to me, I finally got to reccomend one to her
Me -> My sister. She was looking for somethingt o watch so I gave her jPod. She didn't like it, but it's growing on her (she's on the third ep right now)
Me -> My sister's husband. Monkey see monkey do. One of the rules of marriage.
me -> my mother. This one is weird. She's old, and not hip enough to 'get' the show. she even told me she hated it. But I think she'll see it through.

So there's the word of mouth. I watched the show because of Person A. Persons B,C,D,E and F watch it because I recommended it.

You need time for a show like this, or any show, to gain in notoriety. Hell, I still have a heckload of people to recommended it to, who in turn will pass it on. Executives need to look past the current profit margin and look to the future.

((Colin Cunningham is steve? I just found that out. Vancouver really has a set actor pool, doesn't it?))

Ok. I'm turning into a jPod stalker. Bit it has to be saved. Can I run my idea past you guys? This is it:
Networks respond well to written letters. How would they respond to stalkers?

To save a show alot of people suggest picking one item, specific to the show, something fans would get behind and having fan's mail it in. Jericho had peanuts. The Dresden Files had drumsticks. And I think I may have jPod's:

My idea is cheap to make. the base components would be less then 5 bucks. But it would take time and effort to make thus showing that the fan cares enough to stalk a tv show.

I stole the idea from episode 3: Emo-tion Capture.
Taking a reference from within the show means alot mor ethen some random thing elsewhere.

My idea is 'We Stalk jPod'.

Red cardboard lovehearts. Made with love (And lettering from magazines), with these words:

jPod,
You are the sunshine of my life. I can't imagine a world without you.

Cheap, easy. But bound to be effective. Heck, I'd even have one or two coming from Australia.

Anyway, YES! Tell a friend! Share it! Get CBC to make their 'watch' links open to the world instead of just CA. They'd have thousands of fans over night if they just changed one little line of programming....

I love your idea! I can do that! Also, I was thinking of Lego people, if you can find them at a thrift store. They run on ebay in lots if you are interested. I'm hoping to find a cowboy. All my kids' legos are in storage or I would just start sendin them now.

As for the Vancouver actors, yes, I love it! They are like the NZ/AU group. Love seeing that solidarity. it's very appealing and no one gets typcast. Colin plays someone different in everything I've seen him in. Did anyone else see his 'short' film where he's trying to quit smoking?

Anyway, I'm all for 'stalking' and sending hearts to jPod.
