Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog

Joss Whedon wrote:Dear Friends,

At last the time has come to reveal to you our Master Plan. BEWARE! Those with weak hearts should log off lest they be terrified by the twisted genius of our schemes! Also pregnant women and the elderly should consider reading only certain sentences. Do not mix with other blogs. Do not operate heavy machinery while reading this blog. You must be this tall to read. 'Kay?

It is time for us to change the face of Show Business as we know it. You know the old adage, "It's Show Business – not Show Friends"? Well now it's Show Friends. We did that. To Show Business. To show Show Business we mean business. (Also, there are now other businesses like it.)

ONE WEEK ONLY! AN INTERNET MINISERIES EVENT!

"Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog" will be streamed, LIVE (that part's not true), FREE (sadly, that part is) right on Drhorrible.com, in mid-July. Specifically:

ACT ONE (Wheee!) will go up Tuesday July 15th.

ACT TWO (OMG!) will go up Thursday July 17th.

ACT THREE (Denouement!) will go up Saturday July 19th.

All acts will stay up until midnight Sunday July 20th. Then they will vanish into the night, like a phantom (but not THE Phantom – that's still playing. Like, everywhere.)

And now to answers a few Frequently (soon to be) Asked Questions:

1) Why, Joss? Why? Why now, why free, why us?

Once upon a time, all the writers in the forest got very mad with the Forest Kings and declared a work-stoppage. The forest creatures were all sad; the mushrooms did not dance, the elderberries gave no juice for the festival wines, and the Teamsters were kinda pissed. (They were very polite about it, though.) During this work-stoppage, many writers tried to form partnerships for outside funding to create new work that circumvented the Forest King system.

Frustrated with the lack of movement on that front, I finally decided to do something very ambitious, very exciting, very mid-life-crisisy. Aided only by everyone I had worked with, was related to or had ever met, I single-handedly created this unique little epic. A supervillain musical, of which, as we all know, there are far too few.

The idea was to make it on the fly, on the cheap – but to make it. To turn out a really thrilling, professionalish piece of entertainment specifically for the internet. To show how much could be done with very little. To show the world there is another way. To give the public (and in particular you guys) something for all your support and patience. And to make a lot of silly jokes. Actually, that sentence probably should have come first.

2) What happens when it goes away? Does it go to a happy farm for always like Fluffy did when mommy was crying and the neighbor kept washing his fender?

No, Dr horrible will live on. We intend to make it available for download soon after it's published. This would be for a nominal fee, which we're hoping people will embrace instead of getting all piratey. We have big dreams, people, and one of them is paying our crew.

And somewhat later, we will put the complete short epic out on DVD – with the finest and bravest extras in all the land. We'll go into greater detail about that at Comiccon, but we're changing the face of Show Friendliness a second time with that crazy DVD.

3) Joss, you are so kind, and generous, and your forehead is like, huge, like SCARY, like I think I can see Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint hanging off it… what can WE do to help this musical extravanganza?

What you always do, peeps! What you're already doing. Spread the word. Rock some banners, widgets, diggs… let people know who wouldn't ordinarily know. It wouldn't hurt if this really was an event. Good for the business, good for the community – communitIES: Hollywood, internet, artists around the world, comic-book fans, musical fans (and even the rather vocal community of people who hate both but will still dig on this). Proving we can turn Dr Horrible into a viable economic proposition as well as an awesome goof will only inspire more people to lay themselves out in the same way. It's time for the dissemination of the artistic process. Create more for less. You are the ones that can make that happen.

Wow. I had no idea how important you guys were. I'm a little afraid of you.

4) Joss, do you ever answer a question simply or coherently?

Shledzguohn?

There'll be more questions, and more long, long answers, but for now I'm just excited that we're actually making this happen. We (and a lot of other people -- gushing to commence soon) worked very hard on the show and we hope/think you guys will be pleased.

Until July 15th , I remain, yours truly, -j, of the firm j, j, m & z.

Felicia Day wrote:I woke up to a slew of excellent news. First, the Dr. Horrible Official Site is up and running! I know for a fact that Jed and Maurissa (writers on Horrible) made that site happen through sheer willpower and extraordinary skill, so kudos to them. I'll be calling for a Guild site revamp you guys. Also, Joss Whedon himself posted a sort of "Horrible Manifesto" on Whedonesque outlining the plan for release, some smart "stick it to the man" verbiage, and appeals to fans. Take a look and, if you want to help this independent effort, please do a few things that I will list here. It won't take long, but will help get the word out about the show!

1) Sign up for the mailing list on the Dr. Horrible site to be the first to know when cool stuff happens.
2) Join the MySpace, Facebook and Twitter that are so nicely linked on the official site as well.
3) There's a "Add Dr. Horrible to your site" link that leads to beautiful buttons and banners. Take these banners and embed them on your website, in your forum sigs, in your email blasts, anywhere the code will go! There's not a lot of time to raise awareness for the show, so anything you can do to promote that would be fantastic!
4) Think about any social networks you use, and link the official site to them! Digg, Mixx, Stumble It, every link in is a help!
5) Finally, think to yourself, "I know a press person or a blogger I can link the trailer and the site to, I'm gonna shoot off an email telling them about Dr. Horrible and Joss' plan for it!" There's no fancy PR person on this project, just thousands of fans. Hmm, who has more power? I wonder...

ooo, interesting, interesting.
Geek: slang term, noting individuals as "a peculiar or otherwise odd person, especially one who is perceived to be overly obsessed with one or more things including those of intellectuality, electronics, etc." Formerly, the term referred to a carnival performer often billed as a wild man whose act usually includes biting the head off a live chicken, bat, snake or bugs. The 1976 edition of the American Heritage Dictionary included only the definition regarding geek shows.

The visits to http://drhorrible.com have been massive! They have made it available globally and the traffic has been overloading some of the servers. If you or your friends are having trouble getting in, just keep trying. It's kind of like Sanctuary launches, if you remember how those went. Sooo cool! People like it! They really really like it!

On a side note, they will be screening it at Comic Con at the Dr. Horrible panel. yay!

Yes! Act II is up.

That has to be the weirdest thing I'd watched lately. It was actually a musical! I seriously wasn't expecting Niel Patrick Harris or Nathan Fillion to sing. Joss is one crazy guy to make this.
I'm just shocked he managed to get a few well known people in it. If it comes out on DVD I'll get it, definitely.

Fox needs to make this into a full sized series. They have to! That last song was really really great. my favourite of all.

It's like they took Little Shop Of Horrors, Wicked, Into The Woods and The Pirate Movie and put it in a blender! I'm totally addicted. I'm trying to learn the songs and think we need to get some gloves and goggles to wear at Comic Con when we watch the screening. I think we should start a 'Rocky Horror Picture Show' type of audiance participation with it. :P

I am soooo there with you, Tel. I've watched it... *tries to count* Um... Hmm... at least 20 times now... I run it in the background trying to memorize the songs. I even dreamed it last night, or sang it all night at least. Randomly I burst into song. I still keep whistling Penny's theme ... :D

As for Captain Hammer = I never imagined ever NOT liking Nathan! I mean, OMG it's Mal! I love Mal! but it's sooo not him. :o

I'll take Billy any day over Hammer.

I have this one memorized:

Brand new day

This appeared as a morale dilemma
'Cause at first it was weird though I swore to eliminate
The worst of the plague that devoured humanity
It's true I was vague 'bout the how so can it be that you
Have shown me the light
It's a brand new day
And the sun is high
All the birds are singing
That you're gonna die
How I hesitated now i wonder why
It's a brand new Day

All the times that you beat me unconscious
I forgive
All the crimes that complete less and honestly (Unsure on this line)
I'll live
Mister Cool, mister Right, mister Know-it-all is through
Now the future is so bright
And i owe it all to you
Showed me the light
It's a brand new me
I got no remorse
Now the waters rising
But I know the course
I'm going to shock the world
Gonna show Bad Horse
It's a brand new day

And penny will see the evil me
Not a joke, not a dork, not a failure
She may cry, but her tears will dry
When I hand her the keys to a shiny new Australia
It's a brand new day
Yeah, the sun is high
All the angels sing
Because you're gonna die
Go ahead and laugh
Yeah, I'm a funny guy
Tell everyone goodbye
It's a brand new day

I know.... I'm.... in shock. I feel so...

Well, Serenity.

You should see how many people are cussing Joss out at the Facebook page!

It's such an awsome show and YEs act 2 has sooo many wonderful incredible moments...

Wonderful music. I keep singing and ...

I'm watching it again...

*sigh*

It makes sense though, like if you read 'secret origins' or 'first issue specials' in comic books, it tells the backstory of the hero or villian SO this could be the 'Secret Origins' of how Dr. Horrible became an archvillian instead of a bumbling wannabe. Still. I expected more of a 'Spell for Chameleon' type of ending...

I, too, liked Act II the most. The start of act III was too full of song for me, but the ending was unexpected.

I didn't think it'd be so popular. the website is getting thousands of hits, and the facebook wall runs out of space in under 4 minutes.

The servers were crashing. They were getting over 1000 hits per minute! popular beyond belife! The ending came as a total shock. I hate it but I get it, as a comic book fan. I hate it... I hate it... :( but i still love it, too. it makes perfect sense.

I know what you mean!

I was like... The first 2 acts were great, this one seems like a totally different story in a strange way...tsk tsk tsk. I'm just ... dissapointed... seemed like a give up... good, still good, just not up there with the other two...

I though it was brilliant... Was/am sorta getting sick of the "perfect endings" Nowadays... But i agree with Telkesh, Act III was too full of song.... But it is a Sing along blog after all.... I'm off to watch the whole thing again all the way through...
