Happy 30th Birthday Xanth!

Here's the place to discuss science fiction and fantasy books, plus their authors.

Happy 30th Birthday Xanth!

New postby Raven Kai » Tue Oct 16, 2007 8:56 pm

This year marks the 30th aniversary of the publication of "A Spell For Chameleon", the very first Xanth book. I think I read this book for the first time somewhere around 1983 or 1984. I was completely enamored with it, especially because the magical land of Xanth was based very heavily upon the state of Florida. I had spent my early childhood in Florida and had free reign of Disney World just about every other weekend (My dead-beat dad would let me roam free while he found the nearest beer tent to get drunk in) and was in love with every aspect of Florida - the beaches along the Gulf of Mexico, the ruins of old forts along the water front, the wilderness filled with exotic animals, the Space Shuttle, the lizards (while I now know they are called ‘American Anoles’, back then we all called them Chameleons because they changed color)! I felt that Florida was a very magical place and once I was dragged to a foreign country (Michigan) in the middle of the biggest blizzard in many decades, I was particularly emotionally ripe for any suggestions made by others that Florida really was just as magical as I felt it was. Thus my passion for Xanth was born and has never truly abated.

I have read all but the last 3 books (there are currently 31), the first of which I have recently acquired. While I must honestly admit that the first 3 books are the best and the first ‘trilogy’ (books 1-9 … Xanthan logic, you see. A true Trilogy is 3 sets of 3) is very good, after that I continued to read mainly to keep in touch with my ‘old friends’, many of whom I had grown up with. I took a few years off, having felt the quality was just insufferable once Tor became the publisher, forcing Piers Anthony to crank a book out every two years regardless of if he wanted to or not, but somewhere along the way to becoming a dirty old man, Piers seems to have caught a second wind and I am enjoying the series much more then I was. I don’t know if he really changed or I did but it’s nice to look forward to reading or rereading a Xanth book. To celebrate the 30th anniversary, I am not only beginning the series over again (I think I have read A Spell For Chameleon at least 6 times in the past 20 years), but I have introduced my 13 year old son to it as well. Most of my books are still in storage at my folks’ home in Michigan while I am here in Virginia now so I have been combing used book stores to replace the series. So far, I’ve been unable to find a used copy of ‘Castle Roogna’ and ‘Centaur Aisle’ so my Xanth reading is on hold until I can get my hands on them. If I can’t find them in the next few weeks, I will bite the bullet and shell out the $7 each for a new copy (though the last new paperback I purchased literally split at the seams within 4 hours of buying it – I’d rather have an old book any day). I have also, AMAZINGLY, been able to find ‘The Companions Of Xanth’ computer game at a pawn shop and the ‘Visual Guide To Xanth’ at a Salvation Army here. My copies are stored away in Michigan with my books so I was truly amazed when I was able to find these to share with my son as well. Now if only I could find copies of the calendars...

Definitely the most lighthearted of reading, a Xanth book is a good way to forget about the rest of the world for a while, suspend your adult-hood and maturity for a moment and get lost in the child-like wonderment of still believing that there really is magic in the world.

*wipes a tear from her eye* Boy, I feel silly now. *sheepish grin*

Would it be terrible to admit I haven't even heard of the author, let alone the books? I guess something to add to the list of what I should read.
The only Xanth I have heard off is a slash writer. hum...

Well, Piers Anthony Jacob has been writing for many decades. He is from UK but has lived in Florida for many years now. The name XANTH comes from his name Peer XANTH Oni. ;) He writes lighthearted fantasy, scifi, horor and soft-porn/scifi. Check out the old man's site here http://www.hipiers.com/ and see if you recognize any titles. He has had some fiction turned into movies and vice versa. Some of his work is great, some is okay and some is not really worth reading but to each their own. My personal favorites are the Battle Circle Trillogy, The Mode Series, the Apprentice Adept Series and the Xanth series. Oh, and I have enjoyed all of his colaborations. He is a good writer and with the right idea, he can really make a book compelling.
